My mom wanted to pick me up from the airport but I wasn’t ready to talk to her at that point, so I scheduled an Uber ride. Houston was hot and humid and sweaty, and after the cloudy, rainy, and cool weather in Mount Edge, I hated the heat. I knew that as soon as the next morning came around, the sun would be up high, bright and working far too well, and that was even more unappealing than the heat.
That surprised me, because I’d never minded it before.
I stared out the window at the familiar buildings and freeways as we pulled away from the airport. Zane hadn’t called or texted while I was on the plane, which hurt a little. He hadn’t even sounded disappointed or bothered when I told him I was leaving, and that hurt even more.
But I still wanted to talk to him, so I dialed his number.
When he picked up on the first ring, I felt a little better about everything.
“Hey.” His voice sounded more growly than usual when he answered.
“Hey there. Did you just shift?” a smile tugged at my lips as I thought about him in bear form. I loved my big, soft, bear of a soulmate.
That thought surprised me. I didn’t love him, did I? How could I? We’d barely spent any time together.
Though, we did hang out for a few hours every day. It wasn’t like we were never together, after all. I’d seen him way more than I’d ever seen Kenton while we were together.
“Yeah, I just got back from the forest.”
My heart swelled. If he’d shifted after I left, it was because the animal in him protested at the idea of letting me leave. He was upset that I had gone away, and maybe it was selfish, but I wanted him to be upset.
I wanted him to miss me, because I missed him every day when he was gone doing whatever he did for the pack.
Gosh, maybe I really did love him. I’d definitely never cared whether or not Kenton missed me, though he proclaimed that he always did loud and clear. I’d never missed him when he was at work, either.
“How was the plane ride?” Zane’s gruff voice pulled me from my thoughts.
“It was fine.” A faint smile pulled at my lips. I was in love with my soulmate. “I booked an Uber so I wouldn’t have to deal with my mom in the car.” I admitted.
He chuckled, one of my favorite sounds in the world.
“That was probably a good call. She sounded pissed when she called me.”
I grimaced.
“Sorry about that. I’ll get on her when I see her in the morning.”
“Don’t be too hard on her. If you disappeared off the face of the earth for three weeks, I would rip the world apart to find you.” He said it lightly, but his words were serious.
Maybe he loved me too.
That thought made my heart soar.
“I’ll make sure to call you every now and then if I ever do that.
